About Bury NUT
Welcome to our website which concentrates on providing information, support, advice & guidance on both national and local issues.
The NUT recruits qualified teachers, & those in training.
In Bury, the NUT has members in all sectors of education within the Borough:
Primary, Secondary, and Special Schools – both maintained & independent schools; the tertiary sector, especially Holy Cross College; centrally employed teachers e.g. those working in central services; those paid under the Soulbury regulations e.g. advisers, consultants, teachers in Adult Education.
Bury NUT is part of the North West Region of the NUT.
The History of Bury NUT
The Bury Division of the National Union of Teachers was created in its current form in 1984.
The Bury Teachers’ Association had been formed in 1875.
There was an association for Ramsbottom and one for Prestwich, Radcliffe & Whitefield (PRW).
In 1973 the three associations, whilst retaining their separate identities, formed the Bury Division of the NUT. This was in preparation for the re-organisation of local government that was to create Bury MBC in April 1974.
In January 1974 Ramsbottom Association merged with Bury. The Bury Division continued as a “multi association Division” (Bury & PRW) until 1984 when the merger of the two associations created the “single association Division” named as Bury Metropolitan Teachers Association.
