NEU Guidance on Public Sector Equality Duty

The former race, gender and disability duties have been replaced by a single public sector "equality duty". The equality duty under the Equality Act 2010 (('the Act') came into effect in April 2011.  The new duty builds upon and consolidates the three earlier duties.

Protected Characteristics

The characteristics that are protected by the equality duty are: 

  • Age
  • Disability
  • Gender reassignment
  • Marriage and civil partnership 
  • Pregnancy and maternity
  • Race
  • Religion or belief
  • Sex
  • Sexual orientation
