Welcome to the website of the Hackney Branch of the National Union of Teachers, the Hackney Teachers Association.

The NUT is the largest teachers’ union both locally and nationally.  Hackney NUT has over 1,400 members from nursery to 6th Form. We are the largest because we are the most effective.

We encourage the participation of all members. We regularly produces newsletters and advice for members. We send delegates theNUT black members' conferences.

The HTA is the only classroom teaching union to meet regularly with The Learning Trust. We negotiate with them on a range of issues affecting all teachers winning some of the best local agreements in the country. The HTA represent all teachers on the Schools Forum in Hackney.

The HTA recognises and celebrates the fact that we are a part of a vibrant inner city community. We work alongside community groups and other trade unionists.

We care passion about defending education. We have been in the forefront of campaigns to oppose SATs, performance pay and league tables. We defend comprehensive, state education and oppose selection and privatisation. We have a proud record of fighting racism and fascism and defending asylum seekers.

Coldest Winter for 30 years

According to the Met Office if the Arctic conditions continue through January it will be the coldest winter since the big freeze of 1978/79.

Accordingly, we have to be prepared for this in our classrooms by the following actions:

  • Classroom should have a thermometer
  • That there is adequate heating in the classroom
  • The minimum legal temperature in the classroom should be 18°C any lower than this will lead to discomfort and a risk of respiratory illness
  • In sickrooms and gymnasia, the appropriate minimum temperatures are 21°C and 15°C respectively.

Contact: Sandra Hall, HTA Health & Safety Adviser if you have any queries.
