The Isle of Wight County Teachers' Association

Welcome to the website for the Isle of Wight County Teachers' Association ( Isle of Wight National Union of Teachers). The National Union of Teachers (NUT) has a strong and growing membership on the island and we are keen to involve and incorporate the values and views of as many of our members as possible. This is an important time for the profession - both nationally as we face the continual battles over workload and pay, and locally where the challenge of reorganisation faces us all. The NUT on the Island has a will to continue to take a strong stand to support our members and to influence policy in the interest of  teachers and pupils.

News of the death of a member of the Local Executive

With sadness I have learned today of the death of Jill Savage.

After a relatively late-diagnosis of cancer, in May/June, followed by a short illness, Jill died on Sunday, 11th July,

2010.

A former Primary Teacher – most lately at Haylands Primary, Ryde – and a long-standing member of the IoWNUT Executive, where for many years she held the TBF Portfolio. I clearly remember Jill's cheerful and varied involvement, endeavour and enthusiasm. She will be greatly missed.

Jill was a delegate at National Conference for several years and preserved a keen interest in local history and archaeology throughout her retirement. She was a great help on the local Executive and was known more widely among the Union family.

My personal condolences and those of the Island NUT will be sent to Jill's family.

John M. McGee (Hon. Sec. IoWNUT)

All Pain, No Gain: The Case Against Cuts

This pamphlet draws on historical experience and other evidence to show that spending cuts will damage the quality of public services, damage the wider economy and jobs, hurt the most vulnerable, but not actually reduce the deficit.

EDUCATION AND YOUNG PEOPLE UPDATE
The Secretary of State for Education, Michael Gove, has issued a ministerial statement confirming the 2.3 per cent pay award for school teachers from September 2010. The pay spines for September 2010 can be found in Appendix C of the STRB's 18th Report Part 2.

Although the statutory processes have yet to be concluded, we advise that local authorities and schools should proceed with the necessary arrangements to prepare for implementation of this pay award with effect from 1 September 2010.
