PROFESSIONAL CONDUCT
The conduct of teachers outside of school is coming under increased scrutiny these days. The Christmas holiday saw stories about the GTCE proposed code of conduct and its notion that teachers should act as responsible role models and maintain standards of behaviour both inside and outside of school. This is nothing new, as teachers are already subject to robust and strict disciplinary protocols, and can already be dismissed for gross professional misconduct. What is new, however, is the apparent widening of definitions in a way which does not affect other professions at a time when other checks and balances are...8 Dec 2008
MODEL WHOLE SCHOOL PAY POLICY
Leicestershire NUT is as frustrated as other organisations, Heads and Governors about the delay in the appearance of this document. The fault is not with the professional associations or the Local Authority. Our progress in updating the 2007 policy has been because the DCFS has not yet published its revised version of the document. This is delaying progress across the country. As the 2008 STPCD contains significant changes from the 2007 STCPD, especially with regard to the calculation of Part-Time teacher pay and working time, this is a major problem. The LA Model Policy will be updated as soon as...8 Dec 2008
Leicestershire Secondary Reorganisation
In May 2008 the County Council Cabinet agreed the vision and strategy for secondary reorganisation in Leicestershire, and this is now part of its Building Schools for the Future Expression of Interest. The Local Authority has to enter into a review of the provision of Secondary Education in the County. No decisions about the nature of this reorganisation have yet been made, and any proposals will be the subject of full consultation. It is important that NUT members do not believe the many rumours being circulated about what the outcome of consultation will be but, instead, use every opportunity to...12 Nov 2008

The NUT was represented by the Acting General Secretary, the President, members of the National Executive and senior officials. The NUT’s representatives noted that teachers wanted a return to collective bargaining and questioned the independence of the STRB. Teachers had suffered de facto pay cuts...2 Nov 2008
BYE-BYE SATS
Christine Blower made the following comment after the recent announcement by Ed Balls: "So at last the KS 3 SATs are to go. The coalition against national testing is now very wide indeed so the real surprise about the announcement from the secretary of state is that he put up such a robust defence of his decision to keep the KS 2 SATs. Is it just that he didn't want us to get all the good news at once? After all the Government had already given the joy of seeing the end of Lord Adonis's reign as Academies supremo. Perhaps now...LINKS TO EDUCATION NEWS FEED SITES
