  About us

With over 1800 members, Lewisham NUT is the largest and most  effective Union association in the London Borough of Lewisham.

We represent teachers in all schools –  community, voluntary aided and academies.

Based in our office in the Town Hall, Lewisham NUT officers are on hand to give you support when you need it.

Our growing Young Teachers group is especially aimed at teachers under-35.

Our experienced team of NUT officers, backed up by both local school reps and the London East  Regional Office, has a long record of successfully supporting teachers with the problems they may face, large and small.

Lewisham NUT keeps members up to date on local and national issues through regular newsletters, school-based and borough-wide meetings.

We have a proud campaigning record, organising to defend comprehensive education, to oppose pay cuts and combat excessive teacher workload.

If you need help, make sure you have joined a Union that you can rely on  to support you - join Lewisham NUT !

ANNUAL REPORT 09/10

Download in full here

2009/10 was another tough year for many teachers – with the burden of workload only getting worse and the demands of Ofsted and observations, testing and tables, adding to the pressure. This was reflected in Lewisham NUT’s individual caseload being the highest we have yet recorded (see chart overpage).

We have worked hard to support teachers facing individual problems but we continue to campaign for the collective action that can provide a real solution to the problems we face. Nationally, at NUT Conference and in union election campaigns, we have supported calls for national action on workload and to oppose the cuts to come after the General Election. Locally, we have encouraged support for the Union’s SATs campaign and local school actions on workload, pay and to oppose privatisation.

Our struggle to defend Local Authority schooling in Lewisham has again been an important part of our work. We have worked with parents and other unions in opposing the threatened ‘Goldsmiths Trust’ and against the Council’s muddled plans for Lewisham Bridge School – with some success. However, those battles are far from over.

We can be proud of our record of activities, quorate meetings and successes – but know the future threatens to be even tougher. So, together, let’s build a strong Union!
