The History of the Lincolnshire Association

In keeping with its radical traditions Lincolnshire was one of the first NUT Associations. The NUT itself began in 1889 and Lincolnshire teachers were involved before the end of the century. Although at the present time it has not been possible to fix an exact date for the formation of the first Lincolnshire Association the artwork on the badge (see left) certainly has a turn of the century feel to it.

The motto of the Lincolnshire Association is 'Fac et Spera' which means 'To Do and To Hope' - a suitable sentiment for teachers in those pre-target - assessment - new harder target days. Maybe today it means you do the job to the best of your ability and hope that it is recognised.

What's Happening in Lincolnshire?

The Lincolnshire Association is very busy organising campaigns - such as the pay and workload campaigns - and transacting other Union business such as helping members with problems, organising delegates for National Conference, publishing Newsletters, etc.

Points to Ponder

Plus ça change... plus c'est la même chose

"School timetables, schemes of work, notes of lessons and even methods of teaching are of infinitely less importance, from an educational point of view, than are well-fed, well-clad children in well-lit and well-ventilated schools, small classes and a sufficiency of competent and contented teachers. Given these latter conditions the former would follow."

Mr. T.P.Sykes, NUT Presidential speech at 1911 Conference in Aberystwyth.
