Work related stress is an important issue for teachers.

HSE research found in 2000 that teaching was the most stressful profession in the UK, with 41.5% of teachers describing themselves as 'highly stressed'.  For comparison, stress levels among the working population are reported as 20%.

From 2003 to 2006 statistics show that the highest reported rates of occupational stress, depression or anxiety were to be found in the teaching and research professions.

Statistics show that teachers are not just 'more likely to be stressed' than other, comparable workers, but also that they are more likely to be more stressed than their counterparts, even those working in other high stress professions.

This has prompted the NUT to carry out work on work related stress for teachers and their advive can be found in a document on "Tackling Stress' to be found by clicking here.
