Ben is nominated by Sheffield NUT

I am standing for the National Executive to place LGBT issues at the heart of the union’s work, whilst ensuring that NUT is a vocal, but reasoned advocate for teachers and wider education.

Before joining the teaching profession I was NUS National LGBT Officer, sitting on its ruling National Executive Committee, successfully taking a lead on a number of high profile campaigns. I led national calls for an end to the ban on gay men donating blood and worked to combat discrimination across education. I will continue this work in NUT, taking an active role on the NEC and ensuring that LGBT members play an in- creasing role in the union.

As a full time teacher and NUT rep at a Sheffield com- prehensive school, I understand the challenges that LGBT members face day-in-day-out in the classroom.

My top three priorities if elected are 

• Campaign for more support for LGBT
teachers in the classroom. Far too many excellent LGBT teachers are lost to the profession because of a lack of support from management when they need it.

• Supporting all NUT members to challenge Homophobia. It’s time for a resourced and high profile training course for members at Stoke Rochford Hall.

• Be a strong voice for LGBT teachers within NUT. LGBT members deserve a vocal advocate willing and able to stand up for their interests.

As a committed campaigner, I have a strong track re- cord of LGBT activism, both inside and outside NUT. I featured in Teacher’s TV’s well-received ‘Gay Teachers’ programme and have been a strong voice for fellow LGBT members.
