SURREY NUT
The History of the Surrey Division
The National Union of Teachers was established in 1870 - although local teachers union branches had been established earlier that that date. The Surrey Division (then called the Surrey County Teachers' Association) was set up in 1903 - to deal directly with Surrey County Council (which had taken over responsibility for schooling in the county the previous year). The Surrey Division was made up of a number of local associations - and this structure remained in place until the beginning of 2007. Since that time the Surrey Division has been a Single Association Division. Surrey boasts many illustrous ex-officers James Chuter-Ede (former Home Secretary and power behind the 1944 Education Act) was a Secretary of the Division - as was Sir Edward Britton - former General Secretary of the NUT.
